How Does Spinal Cord Nerve Stimulation Work?
Prior to having your permanent spinal cord stimulator placed, you will need to undergo a trial period with a temporary device to determine if this treatment is right for you. The trial device will be placed under local or general anesthesia during an outpatient procedure. A hollow needle will be inserted into the space between the bone and the spinal cord. Electrical wires that are externally attached to the generator will then be inserted. You will go home and record any changes in your pain levels. If the trial period significantly decreases your pain, a permanent stimulator can be inserted. After your permanent device is placed, you can return home. Before discharging you, aftercare instructions will be given to ensure proper healing. You may need to come back to our practice for a follow-up appointment to have your sutures removed and to monitor your recovery. If needed, adjustments to the stimulator can be made at this time.
